Die britische Postpunk-Formation The Durutti Column wurde 1978 in Manchester von Vini Reilly (Gitarre, Piano, Komposition) gegründet. Der Bandname geht auf den spanischen Anarchisten Buenaventura Durruti zurück, nur dass man dessen Namen falsch schrieb; ob versehentlich oder absichtlich, ist nicht überliefert. "The Guitar And Other Machines" war das sechste Studioalbum der Band. Es erschien 1987 beim Stammlabel Factory Records. Dessen Gründer Tony Wilson war entscheidend in die Albumentstehung involviert, indem er Reilly an Weihnachten 1985 eine Sammlung elektronischer Instrumente untern Christbaum legte.
