Der in Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire/England geborene Iain Matthew McDonald war 1967 neben Richard Thompson und Ashley Hutchings Gründungsmitglied der britischen Folkrock-Institution Fairport Convention. Während der Aufnahmen zum Album "Unhalfbricking" kehrte er der Band 1969 wegen musikalischer Differenzen den Rücken und startete über den Umweg Matthews Southern Comfort seine beeindruckende Solokarriere, die ihm aber zwischendurch immer noch Platz für Bandaktivitäten ließ, unter anderem bis heute sehr erfolgreich mit Plainsong, Hi-Fi zusammen mit David Surkamp von Pavlov_ÇÖs Dog und seit geraumer Zeit auch wieder mit Matthews Southern Comfort.
