Kobito: My Top 5

01.    Mos Def    Black On Both Sides
I just love Mos Def with all my heart and I love the way he combines heavy Hip Hop vibes with smooth singing and influences from Blues and Soul. He´s the one! Listen to that voice! Look at that guy! Listen to the story he tells! Songs like „Umi say“ are on of a kind and the tell old stories of respect, love and life to me. You got to admit that Mos Def – or Yasiin Bey as he calls himself nowadays – is a true poet using rap and rhymes as a way to express himself. And that he does remembering the roots of this music and this culture – it´s a lesson in a way.

02.    Chilly Gonzales    Solo Piano II
Yeah I know, everybody loves this. I once read Chilly saying that his Piano works are the manifestation of what it sounds like when a drummer is playing piano. And I understand that. You can hear the rhythm in every second, his fingers dancing on the instrument and his intuition guiding him through the melody. I love that record and sometimes I play it when I go for a run.

03.    Busta Rhymes    Genesis
If there would be an album by Busta Rhymes I had to pick it would be all of them – but this on marks a special point. Busta didn´t loose all of his freakyness yet but was already playing his toughness and strength in the music. You can still hear the hunger but his arrogance as well. And I like that. It makes me feel good when I´m riding on my bike or wandering the streets of Berlin, kind of makes me feel untouchable. And then there´s his brilliant presence in all of these – I´ve seen him perform live once and when you see that you know that this guy just was born to do rap. Nothing more, nothing less.

04.    Erykah Badu    Mama's Gun
This is truly a classic and I had it on my phone playing for years now. Erykah Badu always stroke me as a wise person, an old soul, someone who knows that life is a strange thing and who is not afraid of all the obstacles and wrong turns we have to take. Songs like „A.D. 2000“ where she thinks about the importance of her own life – or the absence of that – and shows no fear of being forgotten. That just stuck with me for years. Her voice so smooth, her slang so street on the other hand and all of the songs full of love and life. Plain beautiful!

05.    V.Mann     Fragmente
V.Mann is one of my youth heroes, his stuff absolutely took me into another sphere. This album is so ruff, bursting with arrogance and an agressive attitude which all youngsters have or long to have. The stories of smoking weed, crashing parties and trying to get some money just to spend it are still inspiring I gotta admit. The vibe of this entire album is absolutely connected to Berlin, maybe even more to East-Berlin. V.Mann was the head figure – at least to me – of a movement called Funkviertel which stemmed against gentrification and the cleansing of Berlin very early. They where creative, young and angry – that´s what Hip Hop was, is and always will be to me. Pump that shit, even if you don´t understand the words!
