1. Sleater-Kinney - The Woods (Sub Pop/2005)
The Woods was the last album Sleater-Kinney released before their 9 year long hiatus, and marked the peak in their musical maturity. I’ve taken a lot from this record since I first heard it when I was 16. To me, everything about it is perfect. From the packaging, to the almost unlistenable gain in Modern Girl. My CD version is scratched to high heaven but if I ever lost it I don’t know what I’d do.
2. Patti Smith - Radio Ethiopia (Arista/1976)
I bought a re-issue of Radio Ethiopia on a trip to Berlin. When I got home I remember sitting in front of my record player listening through over and over. I’d just had a wild time reading Patti’s autobiography, Just Kids, and I felt cheated that I couldn’t exist in 70’s New York as a poor artist. I’m almost over that now, but I’m left with one of my favourite ever records. My favourite song is Pissing In A River – I referenced some of the lyrics in a Muncie Girls song.
3. Laura Marling - Once I Was An Eagle (Virgin/2013)
I actually think that Laura Marling is massively underrated, at least among my friends she is. The first four songs of Once I Was An Eagle flow together and share a recurring theme featuring a sitar and bongos. It’s hard to tell where one song ends and another begins. This is my ‘cooking dinner and drinking red wine’ album. It’s simultaneously thought provoking and tranquilising.
4. Alvvays - Alvvays (Polyvinyl/2014)
This album is totally short and sweet. I find that the more I listen to it the more I take from it. All nine songs are laid back and the vocals just float past but when you lock in with the lyrics there is a lot of context. My favourite line is “forget about the party police, we could find comfort in debauchery.”
I put off listening to this record for ages because everyone was giving it so much attention and that can be annoying. Sometimes you want a band to be your own discovery, but in the end I gave it a spin and inevitably fell in love.
5. Against Me! - Transgender Dysphoria Blues (Total Treble/Xtra Mile/2014)
There’s obviously a lot to say about this groundbreaking album and it’s probably all been said before – the reviews were plentiful and praiseful. I’ve found so much inspiration in Laura Jane Grace’s unapologetic song writing. Against Me! Have always been one of my all time favourites but when this record came out, I couldn’t believe the wave of conversation and motivation that it sparked.
The best songs are the first and last. Black Me Out is full of weird and awesome lines – “I wanna piss on the walls of your house” being one of them. The vinyl is great too. I love my blue and white swirly copy!
